Family Fishing in Kona with
Captain Dale Leverone and Sea Strike

Big or Small, It's your call!

Chartering Fun for All Ages!

"We catch the little ones too."

It isn't all about big-game fishing. The whole family can enjoy a day of Kona fishing, and it's amazing to see the sort of fish that kids can land. Fishing in Kona, the Sea Strike doesn't have to go far out of the harbor to get in some good action for the kids. Alfonsin (shown on the left), can be found within a mile offshore, along with many other types of bottom fish such as grouper, goat fish and ulua (also knows as giant trevally).

Ok. So little girly girls aren't necessarly thrilled to hold the icky slimy fish, as you can surely tell in the photo at left. I was there for this catch though, and I can assure you she was pretty happy while she was hooked up to it, and thrilled to have caught it.

Kona fishing with Gray Taxidermy

On a business trip for Gray Taxidermy, Ian Hall and his family took a little time out do a little fishing of their own aboard the Sea Strike. Just going out for a Sunday stroll, Ian just wanted his kids to catch a fish if possible, while he sat back to relax and talk story with Captain Dale and first mate Jack Leverone.

Ono (wahoo) and mahi mahi are caught any time of year and are exceptional fun and great eating. These fish generally range from 12 pounds to 50 pounds. Mahi mahi, also known as dolphin fish, put on a great aerial display, and are quite colorful.

Spearfish ,striped marlin and sailfish are a smaller variety of billfish than Kona's world record Pacific blue marlin and black marlin, and provide a great challenge for the young and old angler alike. The striped marlin, shown on the right, was caught this spring by 12-year-old Ruri, while her dad watched.

The Sea Strike has caught stickfish weighing up to 12 pounds! Generally they run much smaller, but they put up an engaging and exciting battle. The Sea Strike lets these go at the back of the boat to fight another day after pictures are taken for posterity.

The Hall family had a great day of fishing aboard the Sea Strike recently. Each of the kids caught a pacific blue marlin, while mom caught a mahi mahi, shown at left.

Type wrasse into a search engine and you will get 2 million results. Kona is home to many varieties of wrasse. They come in a rainbow of colors, every type having their own markings and individuality. The wrasse shown here (bottom right) is one of 600 species.

David Bobiak & sons caught a nice ahi while fishing in Kona aboard the Sea Strike, pictured here with first mate Jack Leverone.

The Sea Strike closed out March 2011 with some notable catches. Last Monday, while trolling through a bait school, the Sea Strike hooked up to an ahi. Yellow fin tuna are fun to watch, with their aerial displays, but once hooked up, they usually go deep for the battle. Ahi are fierce competitors and can take quite a while to bring to gaff. In Monday's fight however, it took a mere 20 minutes to bring this ahi (pictured left) to the back of the boat. The yellow fin tuna weighed in at just over 100 pounds. Nice catch!!
