KONA DEEP SEA FISHING NEWS

Spring fishing in Kona netted this nice spearfish Kona mahi mahi

The spring is a great time to travel to Kona and get some spectacular sportfishing in. April and May are considered somewhat off-season as far as general travelling goes, so great deals on airfare and hotels are much easier to find than in the summer or dead of winter.

SPRINGTIME is a great time to catch game fish such as spearfish (shown at left), ono (also known as wahoo), ahi and mahi mahi (shown at right). Schools of mahi mahi can be found feeding around any type of floater that has been out there for awhile. If you get into one of these schools, get ready for a considerable amount of great action. Mahi mahi put on great aerial displays and fight hard, making them a great sport fish to catch.

Spearfish are short-nosed billfish. They are tricky to hook up and keep hooked up to, and they put up a great fight. Known as "Hebi" in Hawaii, these fish tend to show up in the spring. They are rewarding to catch, and these billfish (much smaller than the average Pacific blue marlin) are the perfect size to make a great trophy mount for the wall.

Pacific blue marlin are in Hawaiian waters year around. There is no specific time to come and angle one of these great sport fish. 2012 has so far proven to be a very fruitful year for large marlin. Several weighing over 500 pounds have been caught so far this year; with some of those weighed and sold to the market and some released to fight again.

To make your reservation to charter the Sea Strike, or for information regarding Kona fishing this spring or any other time during the year, call Captain Dale at 808-895-1972 or just EMAIL him.

Arlene McKitrick had never caught a fish in Hawaii. Originally from Washington state, she has had alot of experience fishing in the Pacific Northwest. While on vacation in Kona, son Steve McKitrick brought her aboard the Sea Strike for a morning on the water. Steve McKitrick has been fishing with Captain Dale on the Sea Strike for several years now as angler and deckhand. It was nice to get his mom out for a change. Arlene hooked up to an ono and fought it valiantly. It weighed in at about 30 pounds.

Kona fishing

Tom chartered the Sea Strike recently. He showed up wearing a hat with a tuna on it and told us about the 100 lb tuna he had caught down in Florida. However, Tom came to Kona to catch his first blue marlin. Sure enough he caught a 160 lb. tuna the first day. Captain Dale suggested to Tom that he wear a hat with a marlin on it for day two. He did and on day two we released a blue marlin estimated at 250 lbs. Tom also got a 30 lb. wahoo for the dinner table, and a spearfish, which we sent to the Grey's Taxidermy in Florida, for Tom's wall.
